Prayer in the Spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph

I would like to call your attention to a relatively new feature on the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston website. The page is called "Prayer in the CSSJ Spirit." At the moment there are three prayers available for download:

Sisters of St. Joseph -- Beginnings in France

The first and third of these prayers were developed for our  Corporation for Sponsored Ministries Boards of Trustees and are being made available to a wider audience through our website. The second is a prayer developed several years ago during one of the Bearers of the Tradition Institutes at Manna House of Prayer in Concordia, KS.

As we add to this page, you are welcome to download any of these prayers for your use. Every effort has been made to credit sources used in these prayers. We ask that, if you adapt them, you, too, credit the sources and let us know of edits by by contacting the Boston CSJ Communications Office.

It should surprise no one that the World Series wager between the Boston and St. Louis Sisters of St. Joseph was fulfilled in style at the 2013 CSSJ Leadership Assembly.  On Friday afternoon the entire group took a few minutes to witness the presentation of $101.00 promised by the St. Louis CSJ Provincial Leadership Team for Bakhita House. As a “consolation prize,” the Boston CSJ Leadership Team presented the St. Louis Sisters with a Red Sox pennant, a baseball signed by Larry Lucchino, and $101.00 toward their ministry in Uganda — all in the spirit of inclusive love!

Sisters of St. Joseph and Allston/Brighton Business Leaders Celebrate Sixth Annual Fall Luncheon

Brighton, MA: On Tuesday, October 15, 2013, Sister Rosemary Brennan, President of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, welcomed business leaders of the Brighton and Allston Communities to the sixth annual Fall Luncheon which benefits two Brighton-Allston ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph. This luncheon was hosted in conjunction with Allston Board of Trade, Brighton Board of Trade, Allston Village Main Streets, and Brighton Main Streets. The event was attended by over seventy business professionals, sisters, associates, co-workers, Brighton/Allston neighbors, as well as city and state officials.

In her opening remarks, Sister Rosemary Brennan, CSJ, explained that, “At the beginning of this month we, the Sisters of St. Joseph, opened a year of celebration in honor our 140 years of presence and service to the people of Boston. Serving the people of Boston has been and continues to be a grand adventure. However we are very aware we are not in it by ourselves. It is this relationship we celebrate today and thank each of you for partnering with us as we continue this adventure together.”

Dorcas Vegara, the first speaker, is a graduate of The Literacy Connection, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Pat Andrews, Director of The Literacy Connection, introduced Dorcas and explained how much the Allston-Brighton Community has benefited by the contributions of hundreds like Dorcas whose participation in The Literacy Connection and The Women’s Table, both programs of the Sisters of St. Joseph, enables women and men to be contributing members of their neighborhoods. Dorcas went on to tell the group that, “The Literacy Connection means support for me and many in the neighborhood. It is here I learned of my rights and responsibilities as a citizen, have gained confidence, and have come to feel I belong to the community.”

State Representative Kevin Honan, Master of Ceremonies, introduced guest speaker, James T. Brett, President of the New England Council. Brett spoke not only of his long history and deep connections with the Sisters of St. Joseph but also of the work of the New England Council. He spoke of how the New England Council is the Chamber of Commerce of New England. It is about assessing the needs of New England, building relationships, and making connections to get the job done. After he spoke, Sister Rosemary noted the similarity with the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph who see relationship at the heart of their mission.

At the conclusion of the luncheon the “CSJ Community Service Award” was given to Mayor Thomas Menino, “in absentia,” for his tireless and dedicated service to the people of Boston and in particular to those who live in Boston’s neighborhoods. Sister Rosemary said, “As Sisters of St. Joseph our mission is to be of service to ‘the dear neighbor without distinction’ and Mayor Menino, throughout his tenure, has admirably witnessed to this mission.”

There are many reasons to mark an anniversary such as this and perhaps the most important reason is the millions of students, families, parishioners, clergy and co-workers to whom we are deeply grateful. In our Constitution, we state, "We acknowledge humbly and gratefully that from those to whom we minister we receive more than we give, indeed, in full measure and flowing over." It is this relationship we celebrate during this 140th year -- a relationship that is at the heart of all we are and do.

Sisters of St. Joseph & The Piano Project

Have you heard about the Piano Project? On Friday, September 27, Sisters and employees at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse, Brighton, MA joined in the "Play Me, I'm Yours Piano Project" with a little musical fun. Sister Florence Kahler played the street piano located a block away from the Motherhouse while others joined in singing.

50th Anniversary of the March on Washington: Celebrate, Commemorate, Continue the Dream...

The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom that occurred on August 28, 1963, was a milestone in United States history.  As our nation commemorates the 50th anniversary of this event, and the powerful message of Dr. Martin L. King Jr., we celebrate the way in which participants of different racial groups and faith denominations united as one for a just cause.

In the words of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 

"It was here that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous 'I Have A Dream' speech, which redirected the moral compass of the nation toward concern for the cause of justice...Seeking to touch and to move the heart of America, they came to the nation's capital and marched to advance the cause for Civil Rights, calling for an end to segregation.  ...the participants marched on foot and proclaimed the good news of our God who acts in favor of the marginalized in our country;  they called upon the nation to enact legislation that would benefit those suffering and forgotten."

On Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 9:00 A.M., exactly fifty years later, we shall gather for prayer in the Motherhouse chapel for a brief service to celebrate this remarkable event.  This will be an open gathering to which our neighbors, friends, co-workers, and local politicians are invited. 

What a wonderful opportunity to continue to Dare to Dream together!

Sisters of St. Joseph in Egypt

We have Sisters of St. Joseph of the Lyon Congregation in Egypt. This letter from Lyon was forwarded to us by Patty Johnson, CSJ, Executive Director of our CSSJ US Federation. It tells of the school where our sisters minister in Minya that was targeted and pillaged by the Muslim Brotherhood. May we keep them and all the people of Egypt in prayer.

Dear Sisters,

We are constantly hearing news about the situation in Egypt but you must be expecting more precise information from our Sisters.

The Sisters are all in good health, but with their people, are living a difficult situation. As they were all in Cairo for their retreat, Wednesday afternoon (their last day), they learned that the Muslim Brotherhood targeted the school and the caretaker’s house: they pillaged, set fire to the oldest part of the house, burnt cars and school buses.  It seems that the Sisters’ house was not too heavily damaged.

In many areas of the city and in other cities where the Copts (Christians, Catholics and orthodox) are few in number, there were similar assaults: churches and schools destroyed by fire, as well as businesses owned by Christians.

Yesterday morning, the Sisters left the retreat house but stayed in two communities in Cairo because these days, there are no means of travel to Minya.  Some are at Heliopolis and others are at the retirement house in Dar el Adra.

 

Not being at home during those events, the Sisters are aware of having narrowly escaped more serious outcomes.  The caretaker and his family had left the premises an hour earlier.

The Sisters are in contact with the Principal of the school who lives in Minya and with a lawyer who sent them photos of the damage done and have begun to assess the losses sustained.  This is a huge worry for the Sisters since they do not know when they will be able to return to Minya.

 

The Sisters can receive mail sent to Cairo. We remain in contact with them and assure them of our prayer that peace may return to their country.

Younger nuns envision a future much smaller, but still bright

This week I'm participating in a course at Boston College with Sandra Schneiders, IHM, entitled,
"Religious Life: A Vocation in and for the People of God." 

Last week Catholic sisters in their 20s, 30s, and 40s met across the country in Belmont California. The focus of that conference was "Mission and Ministry in the 21st  Century. Here is one of several news articles about the conference: Catholic San Francisco. 

And in Concordia, Kansas...very much the heartland of our country, during these two weeks, Sisters of St. Joseph from across the country have been gathering for a workshop/retreat titled "Bearers of the Tradition, Phase 3. These sisters are deepening their awareness of our mission and charism.

  

Just think about it, these events are happening from "sea to shining sea" and places in between. This has to be the Spirit alive in and among vowed women religious today.

Boston Red Sox bring back 'Nuns Day at Fenway Park'

Well, today many sisters from around Boston and beyond are heading to Fenway Park. Back in the 1950's they used to have what was called "Nuns Day at Fenway Park." This time the invitation came with the title "Sisters Day at Fenway Park." Good...because "nuns" are actually women religious who are cloistered, live in a monastery, and would not be likely to go "out to the ball game." Sisters are apostolic women religious who live and minister among people. Yes, we come in all sizes, shapes, and ages...but we are not cloistered or monastic. It's interesting that the Springfield Republican newspaper continued to use the word "nuns" in an article they posted yesterday. Here is the link to the article.

It seems that the inspiration for this event came from a woman in Springfield whose daughter works with the Red Sox. It's all explained in this article.

The Salvadoran Civil War claimed the lives of thousands of innocent children, women, and men. Many of these civilians were kidnapped, tortured, and murdered without any official recognition or record, today they are referred to as the “Disappeared”.

To this day, tens of thousands of family members of the Disappeared still do not know what happened to their sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters.

Marina was disappeared as a child and Patricia was disappeared and tortured twice during the civil war. Both have family members who were disappeared and have worked for truth and justice since their adolescence.

Who could have imagined the events of this past week. Who would want to imagine them. This week's Soundings Update begins with an article about this tragedy that tells a bit of our Boston CSJ personal connections with the Marathon tragedy.

Sisters of St. Joseph & Boston Marathon Tragedy,

As Sisters of St Joseph and Associates may we keep in prayer all who were impacted by today's senseless tragedy. Our hearts are with all who lost loved ones and with those who were injured. We are aware many of you had family members, friends, and associates who participated in today's Boston Marathon. In addition many of our dear ones served as courageous first responders in the midst of today's tragic situation.

As we who live here in Boston are mindful of all who are affected, please know that our CSSJ sisters and associates across the country have been expressing their care and concern. Email, tweets, facebook posts, and calls have abounded. May this prayerful solidarity bring comfort and courage to face whatever ways we may be called to reach out to our neighbors in the days ahead.
