LCWR responds to Newtown Tragedy, Feast of Holy Innocents

On December 28 you're invited to join in prayer for all impacted by the Newtown, CT tragedy. December 28 is the day our Chruch traditionally celebrates the feast of the Holy Innocents.

LCWR: A Response to the Newtown Tragedy

The tragedy of the past days has called the nation into a period of mourning. We are all deeply affected by the killings in Newtown, Connecticut. Perhaps it was the thought of first graders suffering such brutality, innocent children enduring trauma just before Christmas. Perhaps it was the tragedy of yet another young person losing complete control while suffering from mental illness. Perhaps it is the poignant reminder that every day in urban areas, children are gunned down, often by other children. There is much to mourn, but mourning is not enough. The killing must stop. America is losing its future. Gun regulation is an imperative. Automatic weapons created for the battlefield have no place in the hands of children or adults incapable of taking responsibility for their use. This societal rupture has been going on far too long and demands immediate action by our national leaders. This is not about protecting the second amendment, but rather protecting the most precious resource we have - the gift of life. This is also a time to restore civility to our world and work to change the pervasive culture of violence found throughout this nation, and especially in the entertainment industry.

We call on all LCWR members to stand up and speak out for the sacredness of the lives of these children and all people everywhere. We suggest letting your elected officials at every level of government know that you favor responsible gun legislation. Encourage congressional leaders to support a federal ban on the sale, transfer, importation, and possession of assault weapons and the munitions that go with them. Ask them to fund robust care for those with mental illness as well as take steps to address the growing use of violence as a means of entertainment. Call on your local and state officials to do the same.

We draw your attention as well to a nation-wide effort to remember the 20 children and six adults killed in Newtown. Motherhouses, monasteries, churches, and town halls are being asked to ring their bells 26 times on December 28, the feast of the Holy Innocents, at noon (EST) and pause for a moment of silence to pray for all the families who have lost loved ones. Perhaps your motherhouses and the parishes where your sisters minister would like to join in this effort.
Let us remember that together we can overcome the deep darkness of these times by the radiant light of our own lives and actions.

In hope and with a prayer for all victims of violence,

Sisters of St. Joseph remember the people of Sandy Hook School

26 candles, a statue of Joseph with Jesus,
and a statue depicting a teacher with three children
served as the centerpiece for this silent prayer of rememberance

At 9:30 this morning, our Motherhouse staff and Motherhouse residents gathered in solidarity with millions around the world in a moment of silent prayer for the 26 children and and adults who were gunned down in Sandy Hook Elementary School a week ago today.

May we continue to hold their families in our prayer.

12-12-12 Our Lady of Guadalupe

12-12-12! Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The image above is one of my Mandala designs which I call the
Tu Madre Mandala
I created this after coordinating several immersion retreats to Mexico. Each time the Benedictine Sisters of Guadalupa who were our gracious hostesses, urged us to tell the story of OLG and the Mexican people. This Mandala is my attempt to do that. A brief explanation follows. Happy Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of ALL our Americas.

Translation of Mandala Text:
"Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Have I not placed you on my lap?
Who else do you need? Do not grieve or worry about anything."

Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to the Mestizo peasant, Juan Diego, in 1531 on Mount Tepeyac. She came, not to the center of power, but to the periphery of a society which had been oppressed and stripped of their indigenous culture, religion and dignity. The "Tu Madre" mandala combines indigenous symbols of hope, resurrection and transformation

from both the Aztec, "Piedra del Sol" and the Mayan Pyramids of Xochicalco with the traditional image of the tilma of Juan Diego. The Virgin wears the blue-green of divinity and her dress is the color of earth. Her head tilts in a listening.

contemplative glance that radiates concern and compassion. Her hands are clasped in a gesture of offering. The black band indicates the expectancy of new life for within her dwells hope for salvation. The Guadalupe event marks the beginning of a new era. It's universal message is not just for Mexicans but our Mexican sisters and brothers ask that we walk with those whose lives are lived on the periphery. They ask that we be open to their struggle even when it's painful.

Here is a presentation about the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We created it for one of our CSJ Associate gatherings
http://www.scribd.com/doc/116526859/Mexico-Story-of-Olg-Web
The powerpoint, itself, gives the broad strokes of the presentation. All th pictures were taken during our Mexico immersion reteats.

First time voter who works with Sisters of St. Joseph

Christela arrived for work today
proudly displaying the sticker given at the polls.
Voting is a great privelege. But I've never been so aware of this since, Christela, a wonderful young woman, showed up in our Advancement Office a couple of years ago. She's now a senior at Christo Rey High School in Boston.

Christela right after being sworn in
as a U.S. Citizen.
Accompanying her are Sister Pat,
Director of The Literacy Connection,
and Mary Rita, a CSJ Associate
and Director of The Women's Table,
 another Boston CSJ ministry.

She worked with Sister Pat, Director of The Literacy Connection; one of our ministries. Sister Pat offers a Citizenship Course as part of The Literacy Connection. She also was helped by Sister Ann in the Advancement Office and many others.
Last spring a picture of her citizenship swearing in day was featured on the front cover of Connecting, our Mission Advancement magazine.

Tuesday's Elections: Prayer for Leadership

This prayer was in my email this morning. It seems like a good way to pray in preparation for Tuesday's elections.

Let Us Pray

Prayer for Leadership

Give us, O God,
leaders whose hearts are large enough
to match the breadth of our own souls
and give us souls strong enough
to follow leaders of vision and wisdom.

In seeking a leader, let us seek
more than development for ourselves—
though development we hope for—
more than security for our own land—
though security we need—
more than satisfaction for our wants—
though many things we desire.
Give us the hearts to choose the leader
who will work with other leaders
to bring safety
to the whole world.

Give us leaders
who lead this nation to virtue
without seeking to impose our kind of virtue
on the virtue of others.
Give us a government
that provides for the advancement
of this country
without taking resources from others
to achieve it.

Give us insight enough ourselves
to choose as leaders those who can tell
strength from power,
growth from greed,
leadership from dominance,
and real greatness from the trappings of grandiosity.
We trust you, Great God,
to open our hearts to learn from those
to whom you speak in different tongues
and to respect the life and words
of those to whom you entrusted
the good of other parts of this globe.

We beg you, Great God,
give us the vision as a people
to know where global leadership truly lies,
to pursue it diligently,
to require it to protect human rights
for everyone everywhere.
We ask these things, Great God,
with minds open to your word
and hearts that trust in your eternal care.

Amen.

Sisters of St. Joseph Sounding Update 10-31-12

The October 31, 2012 issue of Soundings Update is now available at http://www.csjboston.org/su-Oct-31-2012.pdf

A variety of happenings are covered in this issue:
  • During the past couple of weeks, 11 of our Boston associates and sisters visited our associates and sisters in New Mexico. In the same article you can read about our associate October Overnight Gathering in Nahant. Both the trip and the overnight were wonderful for all who participated. Learn more about our CSJ Boston Associate Program at: http://www.csjboston.org/ASSOCIATES.htm

On October 14, our Jubilarians at Bethany Health Care Center celebrated 80, 75, 60, and 50 years of life as Sisters of St. Joseph. There was a total of 16 jubilarians, 5 of whom celebrated 80 years. These sisters are pictured in the latest issue.
On October 24, St. Joseph Preparatory High School hosted sisters, associates, and Brighton employees for tours, prayer, and dinner to celebrate this newest sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Everything about the evening was inspiring and hope-filled.

The very next day, Jackson-Walnut Park Schools, another Sponsored Ministry opened the doors of it's "White House" for the Show House tour presented by the Junior League of Boston. The renovations of this historic estate house used for JWP administrative purposes were breathtaking. What a gift to JWP and our congregation!

Sisters of St. Joseph Being & Acting as One in the Digital Age

Soundings Update for October 17 is now available online. In addition to an article about our October 2, Boston Founders' Day celebration, there is an article about the meeting of CSSJ Federation Communicators who met on the same day just before the NCNWR annual conference . The focus of the CSSJ Communicators Gathering was Being and Acting as One in the Digital Age.

In addition to reading this article, you're also encouraged to check out the frequent updates on the website of the U.S. Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

As part of the prayer to begin the CSSJ Communicators' gathering, we reflected on excerpts from a keynote presentation given by Nancy Sylverster, IHM, during the 2005 NCNWR annual conference. In Nancy's words :
Change is also a constant and so we need to be aware of our changing environments and remind ourselves of the final lesson of the Universe that we are flexible and adaptable. But to do that also needs a sense of ownership of the whole.
We live and work in an increasing complex environment of church and world. We need as many perspectives as possible to think through who we are and how we want to express ourselves.
As Brian Swimme so elegantly writes in The Universe Story, “…To be is to be related, for relationship is the essence of existence….Nothing is itself without everything else…The universe evolves into beings that are different from each other, and that organize themselves…the universe advances into community—into a differentiated web of relationship among sentient centers of creativity.” We need to learn the lessons from the Universe for we are the Universe unfolding.

Patty Johnson, CSJ, during the
CSSJ Communicators' gathering

Although it was not specifically planned, the way in which these words echoed the excellent presentation by Patty Johnson, CSJ, Executive Director of the CSSJ U.S. Federation, confirmed how much in converging and unfolding TOGETHER in our universe. Read the full article on the Federation website to see what I mean.

Six Women Enter CSSJ Federation Novitiate

Read about six women who are entering the Sisters of St. Joseph Federation Novitiate
http://www.sistersofsaintjosephfederation.org/node/132

The Federation Novitiate, a common project of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the United States, is an eight month concentration in the life, spirituality and mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Rooted in the shared spirituality and charism of unity and active, inclusive love, the experience offers the novices the opportunity for greater peer interaction and support, are taught by women with experience and expertise from across the congregations, and come to know themselves as part of a larger CSSJ family in the United States and beyond.

Human Trafficking: Stolen People, Stolen Hope

This morning there is more news from LCWR. Yesterday there was a panel on the work of sisters in working to eradicate human trafficking. It was covered by a local St. Louis TV station. Watch the news video here:
http://fox2now.com/2012/08/10/roman-catholic-sisters-working-to-fight-human-trafficking/

There is also a new article about this panel on the website of U.S. Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

The title is Human Trafficking- Stolen People, Stolen Hope

Those who followed the coverage of the July 2011 Federation Event of the Sisters of St. Joseph will recognize Kim Ritter and Katie Rhodes who spoke at that event. The work continues and there is still so much to be done. Thank you to all who are so passionate about this crime of modern-day slavery.

LCWR Assembly Decides Next Steps in Response to CDF Assessment

Yesterday morning I was out walking and passed by the fence and hedge in the picture at the left. As I continued on, the scene became a reflection for me on how structures can be created to try to set perimeters around growth. But new growth, the growth or the Spirit, finds ways to go beyond these perimeters.

It's been a very active news week for U.S. Catholic Sisters. The media was quite present at the annual assembly of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious [LCWR].

It seems as if every time I open my email there are at least a dozen new articles about the assembly. National Catholic Reporter has posted updates several times a day. If you haven't had a chance to follow this, here's a good link.
http://ncronline.org/news/women-religious/lcwr-assembly-sisters-contemplate-surrender-discernment-authority The article that comes up is titled: At LCWR assembly, sisters contemplate surrender, discernment, authority is followed by several other well written articles about the assembly.

Then this afternoon LCWR posted a press release on their website titled: LCWR Assembly Decides Next Steps in Response to CDF Assessment follow the link. Then you need to download the pdf file to read the press release. But it's worth the effort.

I'm happy to share that at the end of this press release the election of Carol Zinn, SSJ Philadelphia, as the president-elect of LCWR.

Sister of St. Joseph with ACE program in Haiti

I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted on this blog. What can I say other than Vacation Happens! There are actually still places in the world where there is no internet and Weston, Vermont where I was for a while is one of them.

Shortly after I returned, one of our sisters, Sister Kathy, stopped by my office and alerted me to this video. She serves as Director of Planning and Operations for the Alliance for Catholic Education [ACE] at the University of Notre Dame. Since the earthquake in Haiti, ACE has been working with 2,300 Catholic schools in that country.

The link below will bring you to a video called "Hope in Action." While Kathy is not pictured in the video, it is a wonderful six minute summary of ACE's presence in Haiti and the work in which Kathy has been so involved.

Sisters of St. Joseph Celebrate Transition of Leadership

Sisters of St. Joseph Celebrate Transition of Leadership

Relationship is Always at the Heart of Who We Are

Brighton, MA – On June 24, 2012 the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston participated in the Transition of Leadership for their congregation. Over 500 sisters, associates, colleagues, friends, and family members were present at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Newton, MA for the Mass of celebration. The women who have been elected by the Congregation to serve in the ministry of leadership for the next six years are: Rosemary Brennan, CSJ, Marylou Cassidy, CSJ, Maureen Doherty, CSJ, Margaret L. Sullivan, CSJ, Roseann Amico, CSJ, Gail Donahue, CSJ, and Patricia E. McCarthy, CSJ.

Rosemary Brennan, CSJ, moves into her position as President of the Sisters of St. Joseph from her current position as a General Councilor. Other members of the Leadership Team completing their six-year term are: Mary L. Murphy, CSJ, President; Lee Hogan, CSJ, Assistant President; and Marilyn McGoldrick, CSJ, General Councilor; Brenda Forry, CSJ, Helen Sullivan, CSJ, and Ellen Powers, CSJ, Area Councilors.

During the past year, Sisters of St. Joseph and Associates entered into a year of discernment called “Chapter 2011-2012.”  A chapter year, which takes place every six years, is a time when all members of the Congregation evaluate the past and envision the future. It is a time of prayer, reflection, and action. It is a time that sets the direction for the Congregation to "move forward with confidence and hope.” CSJ Boston Constitution

In her reflections at the end of the liturgy, Sister Rosemary Brennan spoke with conviction and enthusiasm saying, “Each transition of leadership dares us to dream we can co-create a future which ‘moves always towards profound love of God and love of neighbor without distinction.’[i]  The passion and enthusiasm we have for being Sisters of St Joseph and Associates is what impels us to live - knowing that relationship is always at the heart of who we are; and when we find ourselves in situations which test our relationships we will always seek to live in and through our charism – a charism that is our unique gift to our church and our world.

As the new leadership team of the Sisters of St Joseph of Boston, we assume our ministerial responsibilities with prayerful enthusiasm, heartfelt energy, and hope-filled excitement. We look forward to collaborating with you, our sisters, our associates, our partners in ministry, our brother priests, our family, and friends to forward the life and mission of the Congregation.”

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston is a Congregation of vowed religious women of the Church, rooted in gospel values. They are committed to living as women of unity, reconciliation, and inclusive love of neighbor without distinction. Fidelity to this vision is at the heart of their mission.

Statements & Articles about LCWR

As we know, there has been a lot of news coverage about the LCWR and the Vatican's Doctrinal Assessment. We read dozens of these stories each day. The three pieces below found their way into my email over the past couple of days. They seem to offer a balanced voice to a very public conversation
