This issue focuses on The Literacy Connection's annual celebration of Gratitude and Accomplishment. As Sister Pat Andrews, CSJ, said of adult learners of The Literacy Connection in her reflections during the celebration:
"We recognize and congratulate you – your efforts and desire to speak English, to become more involved in your communities, and, for many, to become United States citizens. You are a gift to us! Your sacrifices, motivation, concern for family, and your abundant JOY are an example for us."

First time voter who works with Sisters of St. Joseph

Christela arrived for work today
 proudly displaying the sticker given at the polls.

Voting is a great privelege. But I've never been so aware of this since, Christela, a wonderful young woman, showed up in our Advancement Office a couple of years ago. She's now a senior at Christo Rey High School in Boston.

She worked with Sister Pat, Director of The Literacy Connection; one of our ministries. Sister Pat offers a Citizenship Course as part of The Literacy Connection. She also was helped by Sister Ann in the Advancement Office and many others.
Last spring a picture of her citizenship swearing in day was featured on the front cover of Connecting, our Mission Advancement magazine.

This week's edition has a great story about a young woman who is working with The Literacy Connection to complete her citizenship application -- hardly an easy process as you will learn from the article.

Mary Rita Weschler, CSJA, Director of The Women's Table, works with volunteers to prepare Christmas bags for families at Hastings House in Brighton.

Maxim Monday: Faithful to the Holy Spirit's grace

Yesterday was Pentecost Sunday. There’s so much to say about Maxim 15 and this feast it’s hard to know where to begin. Today The Literacy Connection, one the ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph, had its celebration of gratitude and accomplishment. Every tutor and student who was there had her/his moment of recognition. The Spirit was clearly present in the faces as tutors and students came forward to be recognized, in the words spoken -- particularly as new speakers of English stood with microphone in hand and expressed what learning English means to them, and in the life and energy that permeated the entire gathering.

The process of companioning that goes on in The Literacy Connection requires the fidelity to the grace of the Holy Spirit and the attentive listening of which Maxim 15 speaks. And it certainly results in honor resulting from the success of the good actions of tutors and students working as one. Although most of the students and many of the tutors may never have heard of Maxim 15, they are living it. It was a perfect way to celebrate Pentecost!
