Our latest issue of Soundings Update is now on online. The link says September 21 but it really brings you to the September 27 issue. This issue reports on our CSJ Associates' 25th Anniversary Celebration and the 50th Anniversary of Bethany Health Care Center. Maxim Monday: Everyday Actions & Associate Commitment

Accomplish with great diligence and perfection everyday actions and unexpected ones, and never become careless in this respect. Maxims of the Little Institute # 90.

This past weekend we welcomed five new associates and celebrated the renewal of commitment of our Boston CSJ associates. As the brochure that advertises the associate program states:

"We are women and men who desire to share our faith journeys with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston in a mission of unity and reconciliation. We come from ordinary walks of life, and while affirming our own vocations, acknowledge a call to realizing the prayer of Christ “that all may be one with God and with one another.Wherever we are, we strive to serve in a spirit of simplicity and joy."

Maxim 90 seems to speak the life of our associates who, although they do not profess vows, make a commitment to the Sisters of St. Joseph that they renew each year on the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker.

Sister Marilyn, who welcomed us at the beginning of the liturgy, spoke of the celebration saying:

We come together on this feast of St. Joseph to witness the mutuality of presence, of companioning that allows us to build a relational community where we strive to keep the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph alive and evolving in the neighborhood, in the global community, in the everyday....

I am constantly amazed and humbled by the many ways in which our associates live our spirituality and mission in their day-to-day lives. As Sister Marilyn also stated in her welcome:

"It will be the connection between vowed members and associates that will hold the passion...that sustains and enflames the mission.”

Soundings Update: A Publication of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston

The tulips were photographed at Cunningham Park when I went for a walk there the other day. It's a special place for me because it's where I grew up, learned to swim, ice skate, and even became a Girl Scout. I love walking around the park and being in the space of so many wonderful childhood memories. The other day a young mother approached me with a clipboard and asked me to sign a petition to save the East Milton branch of the local library. I wanted to cry! That's the library that I'd walk or bike to every week. They had a great series of children's historical fiction. I must have read them all. I think that's where I developed my love for historical fiction. The woman had a young daughter with her. I looked at the little girl playing on the swings and of course signed the petition -- not for myself -- but for that little girl.

Taizé prayer & CSJ Associates

Our Associates are having their monthly gathering this week. Associates are women and men who desire to share their faith journeys with the Sisters of St. Joseph. This Saturday some members of our Vocation Team will talk about Taizé prayer with our Associates and will provide an opportunity to experience prayer in the spirit of Taizé.

Since last July, our Vocation Team has been offering Taizé prayer each month. We’ve advertised it on our website, in local papers, parish bulletins, and the Archdiocesan Catholic paper. This simple form of Christian prayer centered on scripture, silence, and song is based on daily prayer of the Taizé Community in France. Participants come from around the Archdiocese of Boston and join with us in this profound prayer experience. This is a picture of how the altar in our Motherhouse chapel was set up for the prayer.
Some of us have had the opportunity to actually visit Taizé in France during October, 2006 and April, 2008 while we were on a pilgrimage to parts of France where the Sisters of St. Joseph began over 350 years ago. Our visit to Taizé was brief but we were able to join in prayer with thousands of young people from all over the world. The come for a week at a time to be part of this powerful experience of ecumenical and multi-lingual prayer.

Our effort to offer this form of prayer at our Motherhouse is still in its beginning stages. However, we have received enthusiastic and positive responses from those who have joined with us.
